Family Education Rights
and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, also known as the Buckley Amendment, is a federal law that protects the privacy of a student’s educational records. The Act applies to all schools that receive federal funding.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student, or former student, who has reached the age of 18 or is attending any school beyond the high school level.

The major provisions of the Act give parents and eligible students the right to:

  • inspect and review all of the student's education records maintained by the school,

  • request that a school correct records believed to be inaccurate or misleading,

  • limit schools from disclosing records without written permission from the parent or eligible student, and

  • be notified annually of their rights under FERPA.
