Title: Lesson Plan Idea using HyperCards
URL:
Location:
Identifier:
Description: Hawaii is an idyllic spot, at least to most of us. For childres of service people stationed at Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii is just the place the are 'for now'. The military lifestyle is a transient one and children typically spend only two or three years in any given school. Joanne Oshiro, a fifth-grade teacher at Wheeler Elementary School, believes that "many of our students feel very different about themselves and their lives than do students who spend a long time in the same place. On top of this, our students come from relatively poor homes. Most Americans don't realize how little and enlisted person in the service earns." In an effort to build her students' self esteem and give them a better understanding of where they live, Oshiro has her students build HYPERCARD stacks with the theme "About Me." The stack contains information about students' favorite food, sports, hobbies, reading interests, and the like. They share this stack, which includes text as well as Canon XapShot photos, with their Internet partners from Armada, Michigan. The Wheeler students also send their partners a video of themselves and their classroom. Oshiro encourages her students to set down at least temporary roots in Hawaii by encouraging them to study the history, geography, and biology of the islands. They also participate in Stargazing Nights to learn more about the universe around them. The next step Oshiro hopes to undertake is having the students manage a home page on the Internet. It will feature life on the base and provide a tour of local rain forest.

URL: none
Location:
Identifier: Viacom New Media, 1515 Broadway, New York, NY 10036 (800)469-2539, $59.95
Description: Beyond the glitzy facade lies a serious video-presentation tool that youngsters are sure to find both challenging and "way cool." An impressive range of high-level tools and capabilites places this program a few cuts above many similar kids' titles and gives it the look and feel of a 'real-life' editing operation. Six full-featured modules let young 'directors' create original graphics and animations, record sounds, compose musical selections, write text titles and more. Sophisticated, often intricate, processes let users mix sounds and add echoes and "reverbs" to audio; overlay animations and graphics on live action video clips; and manipulate graphic displays of music, titles, art and so forth in frame-by-frame edits. Director's Lab also offers a huge library of multimedia elements with over 300 video clips, 475 photos and illustrations, 70 musical riffs, 300 sound effects and more. Ok, it may be disguised in media hype, but if it gets students actively involved, more power to it.

Title: Enhancing Eighth Grade Student Presentations of Scientific Research with Technology.
URL: none
Location:
Identifier: -ERIC_NO- ED389276
Description: " This (unit) was designed to improve the research and communication skills of eighth-grade students with the integration of technology, mathematics, and science when doing real-experience problem solving. Four units were developed that related the use of technology to skills that are also used in gathering, organizing, and manipulating research data and in communicating the findings in a written or oral presentation. Instruction was given during computer literacy class. Units focused on word processing, using a spreadsheet to organize data and create graphs, using design layout principles, and setting up a database and manipulating data. Six of the original 103 subjects, who excelled in scientific research projects, learned to create presentations using Hyperstudio. Analysis of the data indicated that five of the expected outcomes were achieved. The post performance-based test indicated that 92% of the students mastered outlining and reporting skills, and 93% mastered the graphing skills. Student portfolio assessments revealed that 99% learned how to create slides and overheads. Student confidence in the use of skills to enhance presentations rose substantially. Appendixes contain a student self-assessment and a five-item annotated software bibliography. (Contains 6 tables and 28 references.) "

Title: Electronic Portfolios: A New Idea in Assessment.

Location:

Description: "Classroom assessment measures, in the past often limited to multiple-choice and standardized tests, now can involve the creation of portfolios, or collections of pieces of work which the student selects as the best representation of his or her efforts, progress, skills, and accomplishments. Portfolios also usually include teacher evaluations and student self-reflections and can come in several varieties: (1) "developmental" portfolios document improvement in a designated subject area; (2) "teacher planning" portfolios allow teachers to gauge the ability levels of an incoming class; (3) "proficiency" portfolios can be used to determine graduation eligibility; (4) "showcase" portfolios can assemble the best work done across an entire educational career; (5) "employment skills" portfolios can collect assignments that demonstrate work readiness; and (6) "college admission" portfolios can be solicited by admissions officers to judge an applicant's potential for success at a certain academic institution. To solve problems of storage space and of collecting assignments in various media into a cohesive whole, many schools have begun to store portfolios in electronic form on floppy disks or CD-ROM. Software aids like Roger Wagner Publishing's "HyperStudio" and Claris' "FilmMaker Pro" are highlighted, and examples are given of a high school in New York that has implemented an electronic portfolio program.
