Introduction

Have you ever been nervous about an upcoming math test? Did you ever wonder where you could go to practice your math skills? This web quest will help you to locate sites on the Internet which can help you with homework, studying for tests, or just finding math games that can help to increase your math skills. Throughout this web quest you will work in groups to critique web quests that I have found, as well as search the Internet to find some that you would use. You will also need to tell me why those sites stand out to you and why you feel they are more credible and user friendly than others.

Task

Students will search the Internet and critique two sites from a list that I provide. A rubric will be provided on how to critique them. Students will also search the Internet by way of various search engines and locate three helpful sites within their groups. Students will be required to assess their chosen sites and explain what makes them stand out. Each group will present to the class at least one of their sites that they found and demonstrate how it works.

Process

Students will follow the steps below in order to complete the task of the web quest.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated by a rubric created for this web quest. The rubric will assess how students critiqued the sites I provided, how they critiqued the three sites they found, and how they presented one of their sites to the rest of the class.

To see the rubric, click here.

Students are also required to turn in the critique forms from the five different sites they assessed after presenting their web site to the class.

After all of the groups have presented, the class as a whole will reflect on the web quest by writing a short paper. (See Reflection)

Conclusion

This web quest was designed to help students find sites on the Internet to visit when they need more math help. The web quest is geared toward learning how to use search engines to find credible sites as well as critiquing the sites that are found. By the end of this web quest, students will have found numerous sites to consult if they need math help, practice, or just to play math games.

Reflection

It is always important to reflect back on assignments to determine the relevance and success of the project for both the student and the teacher. For this section, students should write a short paper reflecting on the following three things:

Teacher's Notes

My goal for this web quest is to get students more familiar with finding credible web sites on the Internet. I want to give my students guided practice on how to properly use search engines as well as know how to critique web sites for their validity and credibility. I also want to provide my students with ways to get more math help than just from me in the classroom. This web quest is a simple demonstration of how math teachers can incorporate technology into their curriculum because the content is truly math-related. The web quest could take as short as three days or as long as three weeks. I hope students will be able to find math sites that are helpful to them so they can share them with the rest of their classmates.
