Introduction

Many schools around the country are changing dress code policies to mandatory uniform policies. Your school is in the process of making a decision about implementing a school uniform policy. You and 3 of your classmates have been commissioned to put together a presentation for the school board concerning the decision.

Task

To start this process you will take a look at some principles of logic sothat you will understand concepts about logical arguments. Before you take a pro or con stand you will need to check out some arguments for and against uniforms. You will also investigate costs of uniforms vs. cost of school clothes.

Process

  • Define the following terms by linking to one or more of the math sites:

    • Conditional statement, hypothesis, conclusion, random sampling

  • Assign articles to be read and summarized about school uniforms. Each member is to read at least two articles looking for information that is both pro and con.

  • As a group generate at least 4 questions that could be used to interview students on your campus about their viewpoint. Decide how many students should be in your sample. Remember the guidelines concerning random sampling or visit some math sites to get that information.

  • Investigate the cost of uniforms versus the cost of school clothes.

  • After conducting your survey and compiling your information from the online articles decide in your group what stand you will take and how you support your stand.
  • Formulate a conditional statement regarding your stand.
  • Prepare your findings and recommendation for the school board. You may decide what format to use: a well composed letter, a powerpoint presentation, short oral explanations by group members, or another format approved by you instructor.

Conclusion:

You have completed your task. You probably discovered that educational decisions are not easy. Everyone has an opinion on what is best. Often what makes one group happy is disliked by another. Researching a topic is time-consuming but can be enhanced by using the internet for research, understanding and presentation.

Reflection:

Write at least one paragraph about what you learned about making logical decisions. Include how using technology assisted you.
