This WebQuest's objectives are aligned with the following Standards:

Technology Standard 1: Essentials (Grades 4-8)

• Examine information from electronic media and determine its worth.

Language Arts Standard 1: Reading Essentials (Grades 6-8)

• R-E2. Use reading strategies such as making inferences and predicitions, summarizing, paraphrasing.
• PO 1. Identify the main ideas; critical and supporting details.
• PO 3. Summarize the text in own words.

Language Arts Standard 2: Writing Essentials (Grades4-8)

• PO 3. Contain main ideas plus most significant details.
• PO 4. Present clearly written and organized information.
• PO 1. Implement a research strategy that includes: taking notes that summarize and paraphrase information relevant to the topic incorporating notes into a finished product.

Language Arts Standard 4: Viewing and Presenting Essentials : (Grades 4-8)

• Plan, develop and produce a visual presentation, using a variety of media such as videos, films, newspapers, magazines, and computer images.

Workplace Technology Standard 7: Essentials (Grades 4-8)

• Demonstrate technological literacy for productivity in the workplace.
• Demonstrate basic computer operation skills in a variety of applications to organize information.

Overview

To teach this WebQuest, the novel, Catherine, Called Birdy, by Karen Cushman should be read simultaneously. It would be best if this WebQuest were a team effort between the reading and history teachers at the 7th grade level. The WebQuest should take 4-6 weeks for one teacher to complete, if another teacher will team with the project, it could be accomplished in a shorter amount of time.

• Inspiration software
• Access to CD ROM
• Various modeling materials for building a castle or manor house
• Various paper materials for constructing a coat of arms
• Display board for recipe project

Entry Level Skills and Knowledge

Some discussion about Middle Ages should take place before
the WebQuest begins to access prior knowledge. Mention could
be made of Robin Hood, King Arthur, castles, knights and so
forth to begin the discussion.

Students will need to know how to access the web and how to
use HyperStudio and Inspiration. They will also need to know
how to use the CD ROM.

Evaluation

This lesson will be considered successful and mastery of the
aforementioned standards will have taken place if each student
attains the following scores:
