Notes to the Teacher

Topic: Shapes (Math, Cross Curriculum)

Grade Level: K-2

Timeframe: 2-3 weeks

Title of WebQuest: "What in the World is a Shape?"

Goals and Objectives:

At the completion of this Webquest, the student will:
  1. Actively participate in group WebQuest discovery.
  2. Use a computer to research shapes on preselected websites.
  3. Define what a shape is.
  4. Name different shapes.
  5. Observe shapes in nature and in things that people build.
  6. Discuss attributes of a shape.
  7. Draw picture of shape using KidPix.
  8. Analyze how shapes can form designs in nature and architecture.
  9. Create simulated binoculars to use on discovery trip.
  10. Take pictures of shape using digital camera.
  11. Use findings of WebQuest and knowledge about shapes to create a group shape book.
  12. Participate in group presentation and videotaping of shape book.
  13. View class production of shape book presentations.
  14. Reflect on WebQuest experience and complete evaluation form.

Mathematics Standards

Standard 4: Geometry
(4M-R1) Identify, compare, classify, draw and make models of shapes
(4M-F1) Relate geometric concepts to number and measurement ideas

Note: - two-dimensional shapes: square, rectangle, triangle, circle
- three-dimensional figures: sphere, cube, rectangular prism (box), cone, pyramid
- attributes: size; shape; the number of sides, corners and face

PO 1. Identify two-dimensional shapes by name and attribute
PO 2. Draw two-dimensional shapes
(4M-F2) Predict how shapes can be changed by combining or dividing them
PO 1. Build geometric shapes with other common shapes (e.g., tangrams, pattern blocks, geoboards)

(2SS-F3) Describe the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, with emphasis on:
PO 1. the elements of fair play, good sportsmanship, and the idea of treating others the way you want to be treated

Materials Needed:

Computer with Internet access, computer paper, pencils, crayons, drawing paper, shape outlines, toilet paper rolls (to create binoculars), yarn, glue,, book bindings, video camera, digital or regular camera
