III Project Description

A. Demographics

The Catholic Diocese of Phoenix currently has over 30 schools ranging from pre-schools to high schools. Pope John XXIII Catholic School Community, a K - 8 school, was built in 1999 and currently serves about 520 students, from 4 different parishes. Most families fall into the high middle and upper level income brackets. The school population is comprised mostly of Caucasian students, with a minority of Filipinos, African-Americans, Asians, and other heritages. The primary language of our students is English with a very small percentage of bilingual students. None of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The only title money Pope John receives come from the Eisenhower Professional Growth fund and the Innovations in Education Program for math and science. We also just started getting funds for a DARE program are in place. In general the subsidies are very small and still being explored.

B. Description of Project Objectives

Guiding Question Proposal

1. Can using computers enhance and enrich a student's writing?

2. Does parental involvement/ interaction with students improve student learning?

3. Creating an electronic protfolio, with various programs, provides a viable means of tracking and evaluating student progress in writing.

Part of the school's philosophy is that parents are their child's primary teacher. I want to explore how parental involvement and support helps their child's learning and technology skills growth? Some sub questions for research include: What are the findings of parental influence on their child's learning? How has technology, in the home, affected learning? Does using the Internet to gather information or get help make a difference in a student's ability to learn and desire to learn?

C. Participants

1. Morning class is comprised of 31 - third graders.

2. Afternoon class is comprised of nine teams, consisting of a parent and their child. Eight teams are third graders and one team is forth grade. Five teams are from my own class and four teams are from other classes.
