Introduction:

The purpose of this journey is to become familiar with the traditions, customs, and cultures other countries have in celebrating Christmas. (top)

Task:

  1. Take some time to brows through the different countries and get an idea of how they celebrate Christmas.
  2. Choose 2 countries you would like to learn more about. (Try to pick countries that are not too similar.)
  3. Find and read at least 1 Christmas story from each or your countries. Some can be found in the resources and you can also go to the school or public library.
  4. Use the resources provided to complete a summary of the country's traditions, customs, and stories.
  5. Choose 1 of your countries and give a presentation to the class. You must include some kind of visual aid. (Art, food, costume, music, etc.) (top)

Process and Resources:

  1. Log onto the Internet and go to Miss Scanlon's HomePage. Find the Christmas Quest and take about 30 minutes to look at all the different countries you can choose from. Think about why you want to pick a country and make sure you are interested in learning more about that culture.
  2. Decide which 2 countries you want to explore and write them on the Christmas Customs Chart in the classroom. Take time to see if any other students have also chosen your country, you can help each other as needed.
  3. Find and read some Christmas stories that come from your country. Fill out a mini book report form for each book and keep it in your WebQuest folder. (2 book reports are required.)
  4. Explore the Internet sites provided and complete a summary for each country you explore.
  5. Give an oral presentation and include some form of visual aid to the class. (top)

Conclusion and Reflection:

This project will give the students an idea of how other countries and cultures celebrate Christmas. They will also have a better understanding of how many of their own traditions and customs.

After the presentations, each student will write a 5 - 8 sentence paragraph about what they learned and how the meaning of Christmas has changed for them. (top)
