Steven Kellogg

Steven Kellogg grew up in Connecticut drawing constantly and telling stories to his younger sister. When he was very young his grandmother spent many hours with him and taught him about the plants and animals that lived nearby. She helped him appreciate the magic and wonder of little things that other people might consider unimportant. He says that many of the things she taught him still show up in his books.

As he grew up he continued to draw. His advice to young authors is to have as much fun as possible writing and drawing AND spend a lot of time reading stories and looking at illustrations.

Do you have someone in your family that tells you stories or teaches you about the world you live in? Try to write and illustrate one of those stories. Ask your special person to help you add more details.

Do you like tall tales? Mr. Kellogg has written and illustrated quite a few of those. Read his tall tales and then try to write one yourself.

One of Mr. Kellogg's books is about Johnny Appleseed. Maybe this website will inspire you to write a story about Johnny Appleseed or maybe just plant a tree. Either way good things happen!

Here is a site written by 5th graders -- Tall Tales Project.
