Cynthia Rylant

It was not until she went to college that Ms. Rylant made an exciting discovery. She took an English class and discovered great books and great authors. She kept taking as many English classes as she could. But she didn't start writing until after she had become a children's librarian. She read tons of children's literature for her job. Finally she decided she wanted to write children's books herself.

Her first book, When I Was Young in the Mountains, was a remembering book for Ms. Rylant. She was remembering when she stayed with her grandparents as a child. Can you write a book about visiting with your grandparents or someone else very special to you?

If they have email send them a postcard and tell them how special they are. They will enjoy that postcard more than a basket of chocolate chip cookies.

Ask an adult to work with you on this problem. Where did they grow up? If it is a state in the United States look it up at Stately Knowledge. Talk over the information you find. Do they remember the famous spots? What makes them smile when they look at the information? If your grown-up is not from the United States try this site - National Geographic's Map Machine for information. Now go to How Far Is It? and find out about how far away their growing-up spot was.

Record all you have learned.
