Jon Scieszka

Mr. Scieszka often takes a well-known folktale and changes or adds to it to make his own funny story. Like all good literature his books have laughter and lessons for people of all ages.

Check out his favorite books. Notice the variety.

Remember--The more you read, the better you write.

Try investigating some folktales yourself. Here is a website with many tales from the Brothers Grimm. Some of them are pretty grim. (That was a funny joke. Ask a grown-up.) Have someone read some to you. Maybe you would like to try rewrite some of them with a funny change in the story.

One young man in my classroom liked Jon Scieszka's The True Story of The Three Little Pigs so much that he wrote his own crazy folktale. The book "Little Red-Riding Hood and the Three Bears" was very funny.

Even Mr. Scieszka's website is fun to read!

Read and discuss it with a grown-up friend. It has several very important lessons for the young author.
