Jane Yolen

Jane Yolen has written over 60 books. She has written poetry, fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, and ABC books.

Ms. Yolen was captain of her high school girls basketball team. She wrote articles for the high school newspaper. In college she wrote tons of poetry and had a part in a musical play. She thinks that reading a story out loud is important. "Instead of seeing pictures, I am hearing the story as music."

Both of Ms. Yolen's parents were writers. They taught her to value books and love words. Her dad was also a champion kite flyer. Her book, The Emperor and The Kite, is based on a Chinese folktale in which a small girl and big kite save the day.

Here is a great site to investigate kites. It may inspire you to write a book yourself.

In Owl Moon Ms. Yolen talks about a father and child "owling." Here are two great sites to help you learn more about owls or The World of Owls. Try this site about birds in general. Use this site to listen to some great bird sounds.

Here is another site that might interest you. Ms. Yolen answers many questions that young writers would like to know.
