NCTM K-4 Math Standards, Standard 9 Geometry and Spatial Sense

In grades K-4, the mathematics curriculum should include two and three-dimensional geometry so that students can

According to NCTM

Geometry is an important component in the K-4 math curriculum because "geometric knowledge, relationships, and insights are useful in everyday situations and are connected to other mathematical topics and school subjects. Geometry helps us represent and describe in an orderly manner the world in which we live. Children are naturally interested in geometry and find it intriguing and motivating; their spatial capabilities frequently exceed their numerical skills, and tapping these strengths can foster an interest in mathematics and improve number understandings and skills."

According to the Arizona State Standards

Students use geometric methods, properties and relationships as a means to recognize, draw, describe, connect and analyze shapes and representations in the physical world.

Students should know and are able to do the following: (ESSENTIALS Grade 4)

  1. 1. Visualize and draw two- and three-dimensional geometric figures with special attention to analyzing and reasoning informally about their properties (e.g., parallelism, perpendicularity and congruence)
  2. 2. Apply geometric properties and relationships such as congruence, similarity, angle measure, parallelism and perpendicularity to real-world situations
  3. 3. Perform elementary transformations (e.g., tessellations, flips, slides, rotations)
  4. 4. Represent and solve problems relating to size, shape, area and volume using geometric models
