An ornithologist studies birds. This person will be responsible for information on the birds migration habits, eating patterns, mating and reproductive cycles in the wild and in captivity.

A botanist studies plants. This person will be responsible for information on the eagles preferences for nesting.

A zoologist studies animals in general. This person will be responsible for information about animals with whom eagles can and cannot co-exist .

The veterinarian is a doctor to animals. This person will be responsible for information about the biological systems of eagles.

An environmental planner studies and creates environments or habitats for various creatures. This person will be responsible for recommendations and drawings of the portion of the birdhouse in which the eagles will live.

A public relations specialist is the person who informs the public of what is going on in the eagles project. This person will be responsible for news articles, cultural lore, and zoo events.

You have just been hired to work at the city zoo. This is an exciting job because the zoo is brand new. You are part of a team of scientist hired to set up the Birdhouse at the new zoo. Your team will include the following specialists:

Ornithologist

Botanist

Zoologist

Veterinarian

Environmental planner

Public Relations Specialist

Although you are all specialist in your field, you will be working together to gather many different types of information beyond your field of study.

 


Your Tasks

1. Design an Inquiry Plan to research and recommend:

Should the zoo have eagles? Why? Why not?

What should the eagles "cage" look like?

2. Plot the longitude and latitude of the new zoo. Compare and contrast the ideal eagle environment and migrations with where the zoo is to be located.

3. Create recommendations for the structure of the eagles portion of the birdhouse. Consider the size, temperature, plants and other animals that could or should be housed with the eagles.

4. Plan events and celebrations of the eagles for the people in the city whose taxes will be paying for the new zoo. Explain the history of why the eagle is the symbol of the United States of America. Storytell myths and legends about eagles from the United States and other countries.

5. Present your findings to a committee of zoo patrons in a Powerpoint format. Use graphs, maps, and pictures to support your research.
