We are pleased to offer students of __________ School access to the district computer network for electronic mail and the Internet. To gain access to e-mail and the Internet, all students must obtain parental permission and must sign and return this form.
Access to e-mail and the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, museums, and resource sites while exchanging messages with Internet users throughout the world. Our intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives included in our approved curriculum. We believe that the benefits to students from access to the Internet in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration exceed any possible disadvantages.
Families should be advised that some material accessible via the Internet may contain items that are inappropriate, inaccurate or potentially offensive. Although parents and guardians are primarily responsible for setting and conveying the standards that children should follow when using the internet, students using the internet at school will be supervised in order to maximize appropriate and safe use. Should a parent prefer that a student not have e-mail or Internet access, use of the computers is still possible for more traditional purposes such as word processing. To that end,we support and respect each family's right to decide whether or not to apply for access.
Students are responsible for good behavior on school computer networks just as they are in a classroom or a school walkway. Communications on the network are often public in nature. General school rules for behavior and communications apply.
The network is provided for students to conduct research and communicate with others. Access to network services is given to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. Parent permission is required. Access is a privilege - not a right. Access entails responsibility.
Computer files may be treated like school lockers. Teachers may review files and communications to ensure that students are using the internet responsibly. Students are advised never to access, keep, or send anything that they would not want their parents or teachers to see. Should students encounter such material by accident, they are responsible for reporting it their teacher immediately.
