Egyptologists, welcome to Lynda's Archaeological Dig. Through this site you be will digging up information on the internet. You will be performing many tasks to help you learn about Ancient Egypt.

To assist you with your dig, I will give you links to many excellent sites where you can discover all types of information. You will be learning about pyramids, Ancient Egyptian religion, gods and goddesses, mummification pharaohs, hieroglyphics, and more.

The internet is Lynda's Archaeological Dig Site, and all Dig Groups will need to carefully work together to find the artifacts that have been buried here. Have Fun!

 

Here are a few directions for a successful dig.

Begin your dig by checking out:

Write in your journal about what you saw.

Go to the glossary.sheet in the classroom dig site.

Check out Ancient Egypt to answer the following questions.

  • What materials were used by the Ancient Egyptians for their sculpture?
  • is the front, back, or whole body of a stature the most important?
  • Why did the Egyptians mummify their dead?
  • What did they do with the internal organs when they were removed?

Go to Mummies on the Web

Read the following articles and write about each in your journal. (*3)

  • Mummification
  • Mummies
  • Ask the Mummy.
  • How to Make a Mummy
  • Mummy FAQ
  • The Mummy Project
  • Discover what the Cybermummy can tell you by clicking on the questions to learn more about the mummy.

Look at the mummies at the other sites and write about what you saw in your journal.

  • Write in your journal about what you learned.

Read Corkankhamun Explains Mummification

  • Write in your journal.

Check out at least 10 pictures of the pyramids of Egypt.

  • Choose 5 and write about your pyramids in your journal
  • Build a pyramid using the directions and blocks found in The Egyptian Adventure box.

Learn about some artifacts found in tombs. Click on each listing to look at the artifacts.

  • Read the Fact or Fiction page. Write 10 things you learned in your journal. (*5)
  • Pick one or more pictures from the Coloring Book or choose a picture from one of the Egyptian coloring books in the room and color it.

 

Visit the Virtual Museum at Tour Egypt.

Check out some Egyptian gods at Ancient Egyptian Lives (many have pictures), Great 9 Egyptian Gods and More Gods or Egyptian Mythology.

  • Read their descriptions.
  • Choose ten gods and write a description of each god. (*5).
  • Draw a picture of each if possible.

Go to The Tomb of the Chihuahua Pharaohs. Read the page. Press <enter>.

  • Create a drawing of an Ancient Egyptian by following the directions.
  • Draw a scene of Ancient Egypt.

Go to Color Me Egypt. or Egyptian Coloring Book in Kids Section

  • Choose at least one of the pictures to color. The pictures are in the dig site area of the classroom.
  • Create a mural drawing of a scene from Ancient Egypt as shown from the interior or the exterior of a tomb, temple, or palace.
  • Make a diorama or scene showing a part of the lives of Ancient Egyptians

Go to Build a Pharaoh.

  • ·Create a pharaoh's mask using the directions here or the directions in the book, Make it Work! Ancient Egypt.

Watch Quick Time Virtual Reality Panoramas of the Giza Plateau

  • The Temple of Sett I
  • Abydos
  • Kom Ombo
  • Luxor
  • The Sphinx
  • Write in your journal about at least 2 panoramas.

Look at some artifacts of Ancient Egypt.

  • Click on the bottom of the object to read about the object.
  • Write in your journal about at leat 3 objects.

ReadGuardians King Tut

Look at some coffins and sarcophaguses to see how they are decorated.

  • Create a coffin / sarcophagus out of butcher paper.
  • Have a member of your dig group lay down on top of a piece of butcher paper.
  • Lightly trace around him/her. (Be sure the "mummy" folds his/her arms on top of his/her chest.)
  • Separate the coffin into three parts: The head, the chest, and the lower body.
  • Decorate your body. (If your person is a pharaoh don't forget the flail and crook and the false beard.)
  • Make a strip down the center or separating the body parts and write the names of your dig group in hieroglyphics.

Go to Wild Egypt Visit the Nile, the Red Land, and the Sea.

  • Be sure to look and read all three pages.
  • Write in your journal about each area.

Read about 3 famous pharaohs.

  • Khufu
  • Amenhotep
  • Tutankhamun
  • Write in your journal about your pharaohs

Go to Quiz on Ancient Egypt. and another quiz

  • Read each of the descriptions.
  • Decide which picture best fits the facts.
  • Write down each solution you try in your dig journal.
  • (If you want to check out the other answers once you get it right, you don't have to write it down.)

Read about the Rosetta Stone and why it was important to understanding hieorglyphics.

Read about hieroglyphics the alphabet.

  • Translate at least one page in A Little Eyptian.
  • Have your name written in hieroglyphics.
    • Print a copy of your name.
    • Create a cartouche of your name out of clay.
  • Write word or sentence and have it translated to hieroglyphs. Print out your new sentence (Be sure to keep the English version in your journal.)

Go to the Symbol List.

  • Use the diagram at the classroom dig site to show you how to number.
  • Write the name of the symbol and tell something about the symbol.

Go to The Ancient Egyptian Virtual Pyramid. and seaarch the tomb.

  • Click on the numbers to take a walk around the pyramid.
  • Write in your journal about what you see.

Go to Sites and Monuments-Guardian's Egypt

  • Write in your journal about what you see.

Create a pyramid.

  • Draw pictures on the inside sides
  • Write about an area you have visited in Egypt on the bottom square of the pyramid.

Go to the Guardian Sphinx.

  • Read about the Great Sphinx and look at the pictures.
  • Write in your journal about the Great Sphinx.
  • Carve a sphinx out of a bar of soap.

Go to the Mystery Pyramid.

  • Read about the Mystery Pyramid and look at the pictures.
  • Write in your journal about the Mystery Pyramid..

Go to Akhet Egyptology Mummy Project

  • Go to NMS Mummy Project
  • Go to New Facial reconstruction of the Portrait Mummy
  • Click on a "painted portrait", "feet", "see the amazing reconstruction of the mummy's face.
  • Write in your journal about what your saw.

Go back and click on Egyptian Mythology

  • Read all the myths.
  • Write in your journal about at least two myths.

Go back to click and look at the artifacts in the rest of the sections.

  • Tell which was your favorite and why in your journal.

Check out some students Ancient Egyptian burial chambers.

  • Construct your own mummy.
  • Construct a burial chamber in which to put your mummy.
  • Your burial chamber should include wall paintings, the sarcophagus with a coffin in it, canopic jars, and items your Egyptian will need in the afterlife.

Visit a 3-D Ancient Museum.CD

  • Use pointer to travel around the "Reconstruction of an Ancient Egyptian Mummy" CD.
  • Write in your journal about your trip .

Go to The Curse of the Pharaoh

  • Check out at least 10 pictures of the pyramids of Egypt.
    • Choose 5 and write 2 or 3 sentences about each pyramid.
  • Take a virtual trip through a pharaoh's tomb.
    • Build a pyramid using the directions and blocks found in the Egyptian Adventure box.
  • Visit the pyramid and read the article.
    • Write in your journal about what your learned.

Go to Egyptian Sites and Monuments

  • Click on the Temple of Abu Simbel (Back out when you've finished an area)
    • Click on the entrance.
    • Click on the massive stone.
    • Click on the innermost chamber..
  • Click on pharaoh, Ramses II.
    • Click on Nefertari, some of his wives, figure of god Re-Harakhte, row of baboons, large hall, one of the heads on the temple, and the map of the temple.
    • Click on the center icon at the bottom showing the map, then click on the orange areas
  • Check out at least 3 other sites. Be sure to look at each part inside the site.
  • Write about what you saw and learned in your journal.

Take a photographic trip through Egypt at Rigby's Tour of Egypt

  • Read about each site and look at the pictures.
  • Write in your journal about what you saw and read.

Take a CyberJourney of Ancient Egypt.

  • Visit each site.
    • List each site as you visit it.
  • Click and drag on the image to take a look around the site.
  • Write in your journal about what you saw.

Click on The Pyramid Crosswords Puzzle

  • Read the article "Understanding Ancient Egyptian Beliets"
  • Get a Copy of the puzzle from the dig site.
  • Do the Crossword Puzzle.

Learn about many of the pharaohs and significant people of ancient Egypt.

Click on the names of the pharaohs to learn about them. (The ones with the black symbol have pictures.)

Write in your journal about 5 pharaohs.

Concluding Activity: Each dig group will put together a report about some areas they visited, artifacts they found, and ideas that they learned. They will give an oral presentation of their archaeological findings using their report, artifacts they found, the reconstructions they created, and a sample of the web sites they used.
