Decide who will do each of the following jobs:

  • Clerk of the Clipboard:
This person prints out and fills in the
Gathering Information worksheet for each town by using the information the others provide.

  • Map Manager:
This person will type in city and state in the white boxes in
    Mapquest .
    • 1. Look for highways and streets. If streets don't appear, you may need to zoom in using the + button on the side. Zoom in until you see streets. Are they close together? Are there lots of them?

      2. See if there is a tab above the map that says "aerial photo". This is a bird's eye view. Zoom in to look for streets or buildings.

This person will use Mapblast the same way. It may be a little easier to use than MapQuest. Use zoom + button to get a closer look.

Use Maps to search by scrolling down to the letter of the city or town.

    • 1. Click on the city you need if it is there. Look for highways and streets. Also, look at the shaded areas. What do you think they mean?

Check to see if the location is on this Atlas of major cities.

  • Home Page Hunter:
This person will use the Town or City HomePages to find information which can be found by clicking on the
1 behind your location's name. Then go to 2 and so on. Some of them have photos of your location. Give your information to the Clerk of the Clipboard. Your information will be very important for the project later. If you need more information for an Arizona location, you might find it at either Arizona Guide or at City Guides.

  • Almanac Advisor:

Check the Top 50 Cities to see if your city or town is listed. If it is, will it be a rural, suburban, or urban community?

Find the state on this Mid-Sized City chart. Then, look to see if the place is listed on this chart for mid-sized cities.

Even though it is a map inside an almanac, check it for clues. Talk to the Clipboard Clerk for help .

By using census charts you can get an idea of the size of your location. You must follow these steps:

    • 1. Be sure the box called Select a geographic type says "place".

      2. Use the down arrow to select the state in the Select a state box

      3. Wait a moment. After the state is selected, you will have a choice of cities in the Select one or more geographic areas box. Scroll down to the name of your location and click on it.

      4. Next to this box, click on the Map It button. When the map comes up, notice the scale on the bottom. Decide what size this location is.

Use a Chamber of Commerce site:

    • 1. Scroll down and fill in the city or town name and select the state.

      2. Click on select to get to a new screen.

3.Under Chamber of Commerce, click on map.

Think about how many streets and roads there are and how close they are together.

Conclusion

Next, discuss the information your group found and decide how to fill in the conclusion section on the Gathering Information form for the location. You may want to click on the numbers behind the location to remind you of ideas and to get pictures in your head.

  • As a group, decide what comments to write that would help you when you make your collage and presentation.

Collage

Then, begin your collage.

  • The Almanac Advisor will be the leader of the discussion, and will now become the Consultant for all of the jobs below. Your first discussion should be to decide which location best fits the family you're helping to relocate. After that, you may want to go back the Conclusion section and use your worksheet.
  • The Layout Person organizes the way the page will be set up and attaches the parts made by the others.
  • The Lettering Specialist makes titles and captions for the collage and will check the conventions on the plan by working with the Layout Person and the Consultant.
  • The Artist makes pictures or images to include on the collage. He or she can give an art job to anyone on the team who needs work.

Presentation

4. Finally, prepare your oral presentation.

  • Decide who will do what part(s) of the presentation.
  • Refer to your collage as you present!
