Airport - A device that allows computers to communicate in
a wireless environment

MDF - An MDF is the central "brain" on a campus that all IDF's connect to.

IDF - An IDF can hold several switches and back up power supplies for the network. They are located in each wing at Village Meadows and connect to the MDF which is the main communication device on campus. They connect all of the computers on a wing.

Data / Voice Catalyst - This device converts and combines data and voice information and transmits out over a T1 phone line.

Drop - A device that connects rooms to a local switch (IDF) and transmits data from one location to another.

Switch - A device that connects computers to a network and facilitates communication between those computers by recognizing where the information is coming from and where it wants to go to.

 

Router - A device which forwards traffic between networks. The forwarding decision is based on network layer information and routing tables, often constructed by routing protocols.

Server - A server can serve as a storage device for documents, applications, mail or client lists. Information is accessed from the server by passing through either a switch or router located on campus.

T1- A term for a digital carrier facility used to transmit a DS-1 formatted digital signal at 1.544 megabits per second.
