Introduction

When should you start thinking about what you want to do when you grow up?

"Right Now!"

This WebQuest will allow you the opportunity to look at several different careers that might interest you. You will embark upon an exploration of all the great jobs available to you. Most students at your age have not even thought about college let alone a career choice.


Task

You will be asked to perform a career interest survey to help you determine how your personality and preferences are related to certain jobs. You will also explore and analyze at least three different careers. Certain career searches contain video profiles. Then, you will complete a salary and education chart for at least three chosen careers. A brief paper explaining your career preference will be prepared. Finally, you will create a display board or poster board with all your findings and choices,


Process and Resources

Step One:

Preview the following career interest survey sites. Choose one and complete the quiz.

Interest Quiz

Answer 50 Yes or No questions and this site will give you a list of possible careers for you. From there, you may link right to some career information for step three.

Work Interest Quiz

This is a game designed to help you match your interests and skills with similar careers.

Self-Assessment Career Survey

This survey is divided into three areas to help maximize its effectiveness and to let you specify your interests, the aptitudes, and experiences.

BLS Career Information

This site is a place for students who like certain subjects in school. The site will link the subject in school you like to possible careers

Step Two:

Pick up a packet to record your information from your teacher. Write down the career suggestions that were provided by the websites in step one.

 

Step Three:

Research at least three of the careers on your list. Use the following websites to assist your research.

Occupational Outlook Handbook

A great site that contains a great deal of the research information for most careers.

What Do They Do?

Learn about what people do at work and how they make our world a better place.

OCCINFO: Public Search Utility

An Alberta, Canadian website that contains a good deal occupational information.

Video Career Profiles

QuickTime movies that profile real professionals. The site also contains a brief written interview with the professional being profiled. (Very few careers profiled thus far)

 

Step Four:

Choose at least three careers. Record the information in the sections provided in step one. Use the packet provided in step two and log the information in the sections indicated.

 

Step Five:

Analyze the salary and education requirements by creating a two graphs. A grid sheet to complete your graphs should be located in the packet. Find the minimum or base salary for each of your researched careers and make a graph illustrating the difference in base salaries. Also. make a graph illustrating the different minimum education requirements. Click here to check out the sample graphs.

 

Step Six:

Based on all your research, and analysis choose one career. Write a one to two page explanation on why you chose this career. The paper must be typed and double spaced, spell-checked, and grammar reviewed. The paper must also clearly written and easy to understand. This step can be accomplished by using a word processor such as AppleWorks or MicroSoft Word.

 

Step Seven:

Create a display board or poster board, creatively and neatly displaying your research information. The board must also display your graphs and your chosen career paper. Use colors, borders, drawings, and pictures to enhance the creativity of your presentation board.

 

 


Extensions

 

Create a video profile of a professional using iMovie. See this page to obtain questions for the interview and profile.

As a class activity, create a bingo chart (make the same number of boxes as there are students). Place one of the responsibilities from each of the students chosen career in a box. After filling out the chart, make copies for all students. Ask the other students to talk to each other and fill out the name of the career that goes with the listed responsibilities. First student to complete the bingo chart is the winner.

Create a video or radio advertisement encouraging people to get a job in your chosen career field. Incorporate our research findings to relay the facts. Also include propaganda to convince people that this career is the most interesting, well paying, and meaningful careers available.


Conclusion and Reflection

You have finished a very extensive career project. You were permitted to evaluate your interests and compare them to possible careers. You were also fortunate to determine which careers might be the best for you based on salary, education, job duties, and other job requirements. This is a nice beginning to your journey towards growing up. It is this author's purpose to help you evaluate what is important now and in your near future. It was not the author's intention to say you will have to be a doctor, lawyer, nurse, etc. Please do not stop thinking about your future, dream and strive for what you want in life.
