What
we'll learn:
In
this WebQuest students will learn about
the butterfly and its
life
cycle.
What
they'll do:
- fill
in a kidspiration map of the butterfly
life cycle
- keep
a journal using pictures and words of
what we see(observe) about the
butterflies
- color
a butterfly coloring page
symmetrically
- color
pictures of the different stages and
label the stages in order
- create
a mini iMovie in groups of four about
the butterfly life cycle using the
digital photos you took along with
videotaping each member of your group
discussing one of the
stages
to showcase
our projects for parents at our
butterfly release
celebration
The
Tasks to Explore:
Task
1
When your
butterfly eggs are delivered, the teacher
will put you into groups of four to tell
you what stage of the butterflies' life
cycles you are to photograph as it
happens.
- Student
1: takes pictures and is responsible
for telling Tyler about the egg
stage
- Student
2: takes pictures and is responsible
for telling Tyler about the
caterpillar(larva) stage
- Student
3: takes pictures and is responsible
for telling Tyler about the
chrysalis(pupa) stage
- Student
4: takes pictures and is responsible
for telling Tyler about the
butterfly(adult)
stage
Task
2
- Look
at the butterfly eggs each day and draw
or write what you see happening in your
butterfly journal.
Task
3 (This
takes place during the raising of the
butterflies.)
- As a
group, take a look at some sites about
the life cycle stages of the
butterfly and talk about what you see.
Task
3- Coloring &
Sequencing
- Now lets
print a picture of each of the stages
and color them in. Remember color the
butterfly wings the same on both sides
of its body(symmetry)
- Now
number the coloring sheets with a 1, 2,
3 or 4. A one is the first stage in the
butterflies' lives and a four is
last.
Task
4- Researching and
observing
- Look at
these student projects and websites
about the butterfly life cycle
- Take a
look at some of the Butterfly Web
Cams
- Here are
a few pictures of painted lady
butterflies which you are
raising
Teachers:
These
instructions are for the Mac
computers.
You must
have Kidspiration or Inspiration to use
the manipulatable activites below.
When you
click on a Kidspiration or Inspiration
activity below, it will download as a
.hqx document on your desktop. Once
you see the document on your desktop, open
Kidspiration. Go to File/Open and
next to where it says Show, change
it to say all documents and navigate to
find that document. Now when you save it,
it will save as a kidspiration activity.
Task
5
See student
area for pictures of the activities along
with printable html versions of the
activities.
Use
on or more of the Kidspiration activities.
They may be printed or saved for an
electronic portfolio. The activities were
created by teachers within the AESD
district during staff development. Click
on the blue links below to download the
document on a Mac computer.

Task
6- Creating your movie
- Students
need to be grouped into the groups
listed in task 1.
- Students
take photos of what they see happening
at each stage of the life of the
butterfly with a digital student
camera
- After
students have experience with the life
cycle, each student is
videotaped(ditally) in their group
describing the stage they were supposed
to photograph and watch.
- Students
will then be assisted by the teacher in
groups to import their video and stills
to form a life cycle movie to be shown
at the butterfly release
celebration.
- Here is
some information to help you with your
iMovie
Task
7- Invite your parents
- Now we
need to invite parents to our butterfly
release ceremony(you can create an
invitation template for them in
AppleWorks or Word and print
it)
Students
will be showcasing your work throughout
the unit along with your
iMovies.
Let's
Share:
The
Life Cycle of the Butterfly:
- student
work will be shared through the
production of a Kidspiration sample of
the life cycle, journals depicting
student observations and other
extension activities
- their
final video project owill compile their
digital photos, and oral descriptions
of the stages to be presented to the
parents at the butterfly release
ceremony
Let's
Check:
The
Life Cycle of the Butterfly:
- students
will be graded on their butterfly
journals, Kidspiration activities, sand
their sequential coloring
page
- their
final video project on the life cycle
of the butterfly will be scored
according to a rubric(Have groups do a
self check before they present and you
score them. Give them the chance to
make changes to get the 4 if time
allows.)
