Latinos and The Civil Rights Era (esto será en inglés) Inicio These materials are © copyrighted, 2007, by Leticia Salomon. You may link to this page, but any other use must be by permission of the author.
Introduction: We have recently learned about the Civil Rights Era. Naturally, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks and others that worked very hard for basic rights. Unfortunately, history has taught us that some of these rights were simply not provided to everyone at the time. During our studies, many questions were asked. One of those questions was "Where were all the Latinos? It's as if they did not exist", some of you have mentioned. This is not uncommon and has been stated in the past. As a result of this perception, we must work together to teach others about this time period! Imagine that you have been hired as a movie expert. It is your job to inform others about the events that Latinos were involved in by creating a commentary that others will have access to on the internet (a podcast). Without your commentary, many people around the world may end up living their whole life without knowing that Latinos played a vital role during the Civil Rights Era. The Task: You will be working in small groups to learn about Latinos during the Civil Rights Era. You will be creating a podcast that will be a commentary on an HBO movie titled, Walkout, directed by Edward James Olmos. Your commentary will not only focus on a part of the movie that you felt was vital to the plot, but it will also focus on exactly how the the students were able to make a change during this important time in history. After your journey through this WebQuest, you will learn that indeed, Latinos did exist during this time. In fact, many of them were very active in gaining rights and making the world a better place. The Process: 1. For the Movie:
5. Create a script for your podcast.
