Introduction:

We have recently learned about the Civil Rights Era.  Naturally, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks and others that worked very hard for basic rights.  Unfortunately, history has taught us that some of these rights were simply not provided to everyone at the time.  During our studies, many questions were asked.  One of those questions was "Where were all the Latinos? It's as if they did not exist", some of you have  mentioned.  This is not uncommon and has been stated in the past.  As a result of this perception, we must work together to teach others about this time period!

Imagine that you have been hired as a movie expert.  It is your job to inform others about the events that Latinos were involved in by creating a commentary that others will have access to on the internet (a podcast).  Without your commentary, many people around the world may end up living their whole life without knowing that Latinos played a vital role during the Civil Rights Era.

The Task:

You will be working in small groups to learn about Latinos during the Civil Rights Era.  You will be creating a podcast that will be a commentary on an HBO movie titled, Walkout, directed by Edward James Olmos.  Your commentary will not only focus on a part of the movie that you felt was vital to the plot, but it will also focus on exactly how the the students were able to make a change during this important time in history.

After your journey through this WebQuest, you will learn that indeed, Latinos did exist during this time.  In fact, many of them were very active in gaining rights and making the world a better place.

The Process:

1. For the Movie:

  •  You will need to get permission to view the movie.  Go to the link titled "Walkout" below to find out more about it.  Print out a description of the movie for your parents.
  •   Next, print out the permission slip or obtain one from your teacher.  You must bring the permission slip in if you plan on viewing the movie on the specified date(s).  You may also purchase or rent the movie if you choose.
  • Walkout
    • Find out about the movie here.  Be sure to watch the trailer.
walkout
  • Watch the movie and create a storyboard of the important events so that you can comment on the movie in your podcast.
2. The next task you have is to find out more about podcasting.
  • Learn about Audacity, the program that you will be using to create your podcast.
3. Once you have an idea of what you will be creating, organize your group.  You will need to assign the following roles:
    • Researchers: Everyone will be researchers. Researchers gather information about what others have said about the movie to compare it to your notes.  Also take notes on how Latinos impacted the Civil Rights Era.
Writer:  This person writes a script for the podcast. The writer will create a rough draft with the assistance of the other group members and turn this in for review.  A final copy will also need to be turned in.
Tech. Leader:  Although you will all be researching on the computer, this is an important role to assign.  This person must ensure that the podcast is recorded and stored properly.
4.  Listen to my podcast to get an idea of what a podcast sounds like.  Although this podcast was created in Garageband (that is why you will hear some music), you will be able to record your voice and share it with the world.
5.  Create a script for your podcast.
    • Turn in a rough draft for review.
    • Be sure to view the Podcast Rubric.
    • Turn in a final copy.
6.  Create your podcast!
    • Record your podcast properly, using your script.
    • Store your podcast properly by saving to the folder designated by your teacher.
