The Process

Within your group you will divide the work so that each student has the opportunity to take the leading role in a comparison study. Each student will then find his or her country of study from the list provided by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency).

Step 1. Using the CIA database locate your country of study and record the following statistics.

  • Size (you will find these conversion tools helpful in converting sq. km to sq. mi.)

  • Population

  • Average life expectancy

  • Literacy rate

Step 2. Find a state in the United States that has a similar size (this state will be called your comparative state).

Step 3. Using the data provided by the US Census Bureau find the same statistics as you did for your country of study

Step 4. By dividing the population by the area you can determine how crowded a country or state is (population per square mile).

Step 5. Using your data, each student will create a comparison graph of each area you researched. Some suggested graphs have been given. You may choose different graphs for each area of study, do not use the same type of graph twice.

Resources

The following sites will help you in accomplishing your task. Be sure to read the directions after each site as it will help you in your navigation of these large databases.

The World Fact Book

This site is published by the CIA. It allows you to choose a country by a pull down menu then gives you a navigation bar to locate any number of facts relating to the specified country.

The US Census Bureau

Use the pull down menu on the right side to find the information on your comparative state.

The State of the Worlds Children

Literacy statistics provided by UNICEF not as up to date as the CIA Fact Book but still worthy of checking out your facts.

World life expectancy

Even though the CIA fact book contains this same information. This is a nice visual of average life expectancy.
