The Task:

Inherit the Wind, The Scopes Monkey Trial
Task:
You need to answer these questions for yourself as you read the play, Inherit the Wind.
Everyone is required to do this:
Start a Trial Journal Notebook and give each question its own page with the question as the title for that page. Create these pages right now so that you are ready when the action begins.
Who controls the ideas that are taught in our schools and institutions of learning?
Who can decide how these ideas are taught?
Does one group have the right to put forward its particular religious viewpoint on the creation?
Your Trial Journal Notebook has begun.
First:
Each person will be part of a pre-trial presentation to their peers as their character, and some will present to the entire class.
Next:
Each person will be part of one act of the play, and they will dramatically read their character for that section.
Furthermore:
Whose viewpoint will you defend as the trial progresses? For the character you will read in the play, choose a particular person or group of people to standby and support. Select their name from the table below and then gather the information you need to defend their position. Both the real life figure and the character name are shown.
Important Note: In your search for your character background, you will encounter people with different views on this issue. You need to discern what is reasonable and what is irrational. If you encounter a site that is highly objectionable, go to another source and please notify the teacher.
