In Search of a Hero:

The Process

  1. What makes a hero? Different people have different answers to this question. Working in groups of four, you and your team will visit the Miami Valley Heroes' Essay Contest website, where students from 10 to 18 yrs old describe what they believe defines a hero.
  2. After reading and discussing many of these essays, brainstorm the characteristics of a hero. Then, create your own Want-Ad for a hero. Keep in mind the characteristics you have brainstormed. Be creative!
  3. Next, visit the Resource Page and choose an individual from the list compiled by Time Magazine and your teachers that you would like to know more about.
  4. Research that individual. You must use at least one resource from the Internet, (use the links provided in #2 above), and one print resource, (example: a biography or encyclopedia article).

    Your goal is to find as much information about the individual you chose, including but not limited to the following:

    1. Date and Place of Birth
      Family, (parents, spouse, children)
      A chronological account of his or her life
      Hardships or struggles he or she experienced
      Major accomplishments/occupation(s)
      Special events occurring in the world during this person's life
      Date and Place of Death

    As you gather information be sure to change it into your own words. You may use quotes, but must give credit to your source for the quote. You will be required to include a bibliography citing all the sources you used. You can find the proper format for preparing your bibliography here.

  5. From the information you gather in #3 above you will be preparing both a PowerPoint presentation to share with the class, as well as an essay persuading the editors of TIME Magazine that your nominee deserves to be selected as the "Hero of the Century."
  6.  Finally, you will be reflecting on this assignment, evaluating both the process and your products.
