Habitat In the first stage of a butterflies life it attaches it's self (cocoon) to the underside of the milkweed plants leaf.

Butterflies get their food from flowers, wet sand or mud, especially along stream courses or the edges of dirt roads or trails.
How long does this animal live? Ever wonder where a butterfly comes from? It comes from a chrysalis (KRIS-uh-liss) which is also called a pupa. A chrysalis looks like a tiny pouch. Butterflies go through four life stages, and they look very different at each stage.

How does this animal move?
As a caterpillar they are very slow. Some butterflies can fly at about 30 mile per hour or faster. Slow flying butterflies fly about 5 mph.
Predators Caterpillars are slow moving. So this makes them easy prey for predators, like birds, wasps, and other mammals. To protect themselves they use different strategies, including: Poison, camouflage, spot, and bad smells.
Other Information Scientist estimate that there are approximately 12-15,000 species of butterflies. There are thousands and thousands of butterfly species that havent been found or described by scientists.
