elephants, the Asian (Indian) Elephant and the African Elephant.

Elephants are very smart animals. Both elephants have thick, gray wrinkled skin, large ears, a long flexible trunk, and big curving tusks. There are finger like projections at the end of their trunks used for grasping food and carrying it to its mouth. The trunk is also used for carrying water to the mouth Asian elephants look different in a few ways from their African relatives. They have smaller ears which are straight at the bottom, not like the large fan-shape ears of the African elephant. Asian elephants are much smaller. |

Asian elephants: about 7 to 12 feet tall African elephant: about 10 to 13 feet tall |

When full grown how much does this animal weigh? |
Asian elephants are the smaller of the two, weighing between 6,615 and 11,020 pounds. African elephant weigh from 8,820 to 15,430 lb. |

Where does this animal live? |
Elephants live in many different habitats including open grasslands, marshes, savannas and forests and the African Sahara desert. |

What does this animal eat? |
Asian elephants are among the largest herbivores (plant eaters) preferring grasses, leaves, trees, and shrubs. Their diet varies from acacia trees to wild mangos. |

Where does this animal get their food? |
In wide open spaces, the grasslands of Asia and the African Sahara desert. |
|
How long does this animal live? |
Elephants can live up to 60 years in the wild, but those in captivity have been known to reach over 65. |

How does this animal move? Fast/slow |
Elephants cannot run or jump but can walk as fast as 6-8 mph, but average about 4-5 mph. But when charging elephants can reach 25 mph. |

Man - Elephants are killed for their ivory tusks. |

Both the Asian and African elephants are on the Endangered Species list. |
