Description

It has a crest of comblike spines running down the length of its back. Young animals are bright green, becoming darker with age.

How big does this animal get?

The Iguana may reach 6 ft in length.

When full grown how much does this animal weigh?

The Iguana can weigh up to 18 pounds.

Where does this animal live?

Habitat

Found throughout Central and northern South America and much of the West Indies. It lives in trees in the area of ponds or rivers, from sea-level to the mountains.

What does this animal eat?

The common iguana is a vegetarian. (plant eater)

Where does this animal get their food?

When feeding, the iguana returns to the same site day after day. It gets water from catching rain and condensation on the flowers and leaves of trees, but most comes from the food it eats.

How long does this animal live?

The average life span of an iguana is 10 years.

How does this animal move?

These reptiles are fast runners and good climbers. The Iguana is a great swimmer also. It holds its legs close beside it and uses its tail to propel itself through the water.

Predators

The young are small, so a juvenile must watch out for larger predators that could eat it, including bigger iguanas.

Other Information

An iguana can stay under water comfortably for up to 30 minutes!
