Description

Jaguars are bigger than leopards, and their dark markings are arranged in a rosette of 4 or 5 spots placed around a central lighter-colored spot.

5-6 ft from head to tail, 28 inches tall.

Jaguars weigh about 190 -300 pounds for males and 130-200 pounds for females.

Where does this animal live?

Habitat

Jaguars live in dense tropical rain forests and swampy grasslands. Jaguars make their homes in caves and canyons.

What does this animal eat?

Wild pigs and capybaras are the most important foods to the jaguar, but they also feed upon deer, sloth, cayman, tapir, fresh water fish, armadillos and smaller animals.

Where does this animal get their food?

South American name "jaguara" is said to mean "carnivore that overcomes prey with a single bound." Jaguars stalk and ambush their kill, often dragging the carcass to a safe spot some distance away before devouring it.

The life span of the Jaguar is12-16 years.

Predators

The jaguar was put on the endangered species list in the 1970's, due to loss of habitat and over hunting by man, it is estimated that there are now only15,000 jaguars left in the wild.

They often bury their prey after killing it, in order to eat it later. They hunt mostly at night; they are nocturnal.
