It
is important for students to play a role in the building of their
own classroom community. One part of this is to develop guidelines
for appropriate behavior and what behavior is inappropriate. We
talk about teacher expectations, consequences, and rewards.
To start off the year, we talked about why we come to school.
Standard responses:
Students come to school to play and learn.
Mr. Duzan comes to school to learn and teach.
We
talk about the "Golden Rule" which says, "Treat
others the way you would like to be treated."
As a result of our conversation, we came up with this rule:
RULE 1.
Here
are some concepts we discussed to develop a safe learning classroom
environment.
What
is an Expectation?
That which is expected or looked for.
EXAMPLE: People who drive a car are expected to drive the
speed limit.
What
is a Consequence?
Something that logically or naturally follows from
an action or condition.
The effect of an action or choice.
EXAMPLE: If you drive over the speed limit, you may have an accident
or get a speeding ticket.
What
is a Reward? There are two kinds of rewards, intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic:
Inward; internal; hence, true; genuine; real; essential; inherent;
not merely apparent or accidental.
EXAMPLE: to gain knowledge (to learn, understand, teach)
Extrinsic rewards:
Something given or received in recompense for worthy behavior
or in retribution for evil acts.
EXAMPLE: candy, money, food, or toys
