High Frequency Words

Here are some ideas to help your child learning the 100 most frequently used words in English.

One of our goals in first grade is to learn the 100 most frequently used words in the English language. Sometimes these words are called sight words, because they are words the student does not need to decode, they are known by sight. By the first grading period your student should know 25 sight words, by the second grading period 50, the third 75, and finally the last period all100 sight words.

In class, we use several methods to teach these words. I have described below one method we use in class that you can use at home with your student.

1st Grade HFW

The first step will be to print out the list of High Frequency Words. Second, (click on link above) write the words onto 3X5 flash cards using large and consistent print. Finally, follow the directions below.

In the event your student knows all 100 1st grade words, I have provided lists from 2nd and 3rd grades (located in the left column). These words are provided for your use if you or your student would like to continue extending their word knowledge.

100 HFW Practice Directions

 1. Click on this link to get the sight words: 100 HFW

2. Create your flash cards using large and consistent print.

3. Find a quiet place in the house to practice the flash cards.

4. Hold up each of the cards for no more than 5 seconds.

5. Make one stack for what they know, and one for ones they don't ....know.

6. Encourage regularly i.e., Very Good, Wow, or Good Job.

7. Spend no more then 15-20 minutes per day on this activity.

8. After you have gone through all the cards, choose two words ....from the "don't know" pile. Help your child learn these words. You ...can give them tips on the words structure. Here are a few ...examples:

Example 1:

In the word like, the i makes a long vowel sound and the e is silent. In class, we would say, "the e's job is to help the i say it's name".

Example 2:

In the word "about", ASK: Do you see the word (out) inside the word about?

Example 3:

Chunk up the word into parts they know. ASK: Do the vowel(s) make a long or short sound?

9. You may want to give a small prize for reaching preset goals, .....i.e.,( five words per week) student earns a sticker or coloring .....book.
